RESUMEN

To follow up field observations in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (ChEZ), a series of controlled model aquarium experiments were conducted to determine the uptake and depuration rates of 137Cs and 90Sr in silver Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) in fresh water, varying in temperature from 5 to 27 °C, with daily feeding rates of 0-1.5 % fish weight day-1. In the present study, the 137Cs uptake rates in muscle tissues directly from water, 0.05-0.09 day-1 at temperatures of 5-27 °C, were significantly lower than previously reported for fish fed under natural conditions in contaminated lakes within the ChEZ. The rate of 90Sr uptake in bone tissues of silver Prussian carp varied from 0.055 day-1 at a water temperature of 5 °C and feeding rates ≤0.15 % fish weight day-1 to 1.5 ± 0.2 day-1 at a temperature of 27 ± 1 °Ð¡ and at the highest tested feeding rate of 1.5 % day-1. The rate of decrease of 137Cs concentration in muscle tissues was kb = 0.0028 ± 0.0004 day-1 (T1/2 = 248 ± 35 days) at the lowest water temperature tested (5 °Ð¡). At water temperatures between 13 and 26 °Ð¡ and a feeding rate of 0.15 % day-1, the rate increased to kb = 0.0071-0.0092 day-1 (T1/2 = 75-99 days). The rates of decrease of 90Sr activity concentration in bone tissues at water temperatures between 22 and 25 °Ð¡ and a feeding rate of 0.5 % day-1 were kb=0.004-0.0014 day-1, and the associated biological half-life T1/2 ranged 50-160 days, respectively. The present work supported conclusions related to the main pathways of 137Cs and 90Sr uptake by silver Prussian carp, and demonstrated the usefulness of combining field and laboratory uptake and depuration experiments.

RESUMEN

Recent studies apparently finding deleterious effects of radiation exposure on cataract formation in birds and voles living near Chernobyl represent a major challenge to current radiation protection regulations. This study conducted an integrated assessment of radiation exposure on cataractogenesis using the most advanced technologies available to assess the cataract status of lenses extracted from fish caught at both Chernobyl in Ukraine and Fukushima in Japan. It was hypothesised that these novel data would reveal positive correlations between radiation dose and early indicators of cataract formation. The structure, function and optical properties of lenses were analysed from atomic to millimetre length scales. We measured the short-range order of the lens crystallin proteins using Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) at both the SPring-8 and DIAMOND synchrotrons, the profile of the graded refractive index generated by these proteins, the epithelial cell density and organisation and finally the focal length of each lens. The results showed no evidence of a difference between the focal length, the epithelial cell densities, the refractive indices, the interference functions and the short-range order of crystallin proteins (X-ray diffraction patterns) in lens from fish exposed to different radiation doses. It could be argued that animals in the natural environment which developed cataract would be more likely, for example, to suffer predation leading to survivor bias. But the cross-length scale study presented here, by evaluating small scale molecular and cellular changes in the lens (pre-cataract formation) significantly mitigates against this issue.

RESUMEN

For quantitative visualization of trace elements, an online isotope dilution (ID) laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) method capable of accurately correcting the detection amount of targets is presented. Two aerosols from an ablated sample and a nebulized isotopically enriched spike solution were mixed online using a dual-port spray chamber. In this paper, transmission efficiency (TE) of each of the two gas streams to the ICP-MS detector is revealed, and the quantification values were corrected by including the ratio of TEs in the calculation of the online ID method. To verify the developed method, Fe and Sr as model elements in five certified reference materials (CRMs, glass: SRM 610, 612, 614, alloy: SS-356, -383) were quantified without the use of matrix-matched CRMs. The resultant values agreed with the certified values of CRMs in the range of 92.7-104.7% and 92.8-109.0% for Fe and Sr, respectively. The LODs (3σ) were 0.54 and 0.17 µg g-1 for Fe and Sr, respectively. In addition, the applicability of this method to quantitative imaging of unknown solid samples was demonstrated for actual biological hard tissues (a mouse incisor, human primary tooth, and fish otolith) using the result of shot-analysis. The results were consistent with the reported concentration range obtained by wet chemical analysis.

RESUMEN

Unique data is reported on the transfer of 129I iodine from freshwaters to fish as well as the internal distribution within fish from the Fukushima and Chernobyl exclusion zones (ChEZ). Samples of water, sediments and fish were collected in the contaminated ponds Inkyozaka and Suzuuchi, and in the less contaminated Abukuma river in Fukushima, as well as in the contaminated Glubokoye lake and in the less contaminated Starukha lake in ChEZ. In water, 129I was mainly present as low molecular mass (LMM) and negatively charged species, while a minor fraction was associated with colloidal fraction, most probably organic material in water. The sediment-water 129I apparent distribution coefficients, Kd, ranged from 225 to 329 L/kg, equal that of stable iodine, but did not correlate with 129I/127I ratio or 129I/137Cs ratio as the environmental distribution of radioactive iodine was different from that of stable iodine and radioactive cesium. Concentration ratios (CR) of 129I in muscle of freshwater fish ranged from 85 to 544 across waterbodies with limited water exchange, similar in Fukushima and Chernobyl, but varied with respect to fish species. Thus, this is the first results on the transfer of 129I to freshwater fish, showing that the CR for freshwater fish is higher than CR reported for marine fish. Concentrations of 129I in fish muscle were, however, lower than in the intestinal content, indicating the influence of more contaminated dietary ingredients probably of terrestrial origin based due to δ13C signal on as well as of biodilution. The present results highlighted also that the radiation dose in fish was highly inhomogeneously distributed. Based on the present 129I/127I atomic ratio of 10-5 in the most contaminated fish in the ponds in Fukushima and Glubokoye lake in Chernobyl, however, a radiation dose of 10 µSv/y would not pose any harm to the fish population.

RESUMEN

To elucidate 137Cs contamination levels and mechanisms of fish inhabiting river and pond environments near the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant, 137Cs activity concentrations in fish (15 species, n = 164) and water collected from Maeda River (3.3-8.9 km from the plant) and Shimofukazawa Pond (2.9 km) in 2017 were analyzed. Also, an 8-week rearing experiment using Japanese dace Pseudaspius hakonensis fed on non-contaminated pellets and the pond water (mean 137Cs concentration of 2.0 Bq/L) was conducted to evaluate 137Cs accumulation from water to fish. The 137Cs concentrations in Japanese dace, the only species collected throughout five sampling sites from estuarine to upstream areas in Maeda River, were found to be correlated with ambient air dose rates and fish size, exhibiting large variations (16.5-2.6×103 Bq/kg-wet). By contrast, dissolved 137Cs in river waters increased from the upper to lower course (0.025-0.28 Bq/L), which caused large variations of the water-to-body concentration ratio (CR) in Japanese dace (60.0-35700 L/kg-wet). These CRs (geometric mean of 3670 L/kg-wet) were much higher than the steady-state CR of reared fish (9.7 L/kg-wet), indicating that river fish uptake 137Cs mainly from prey items from aquatic and riparian zones, rather than from water. Statistically significant negative correlations between K+ concentrations in water and river fish CRs were detected, resulting in the decreasing trend of CRs from upstream to estuarine areas. These results suggest that the large heterogeneity of air dose rates, K+ concentration, and estuarine processes in brackish water habitats, in association with the feeding habit and size effect in fish, can engender wide variation of 137Cs concentrations and CRs of river fish along a river course. In contrast, 137Cs concentrations in pond fish (4.3-14.6 kBq/kg-wet) were higher than in river fish. The CRs of pond fish were constantly high but the range was smaller (1010-3440 L/kg-wet) with larger values in fish of higher trophic levels. These findings suggest that biomagnification within a pond was inferred as the main cause of 137Cs contamination of pond fish.

RESUMEN

Diabetes is a global healthcare problem that affects more than 400 million people worldwide. Treatment for type 1 and 2 diabetes is expected by targeting adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase, AMPK, a well-known master regulator of glucose. Many pharmaceutical companies have tried to identify AMPK activators but few direct AMPK activators with high potency for the ß2-AMPK isoform, which is important for glucose homeostasis, have been found. In addition, their chemical structure is limited to benzimidazole or indole derivatives bearing an aromatic substituent at the C5 position of the core structure. We describe herein our efforts to identify novel benzimidazole derivatives that directly activate the ß2-AMPK isoform. Our newly designed activator 14d bearing a 1-amino indanyl moiety at the C5 position of the core exhibited high in vitro potency and good pharmacokinetic profiles. A single oral dosing of 14d showed dose-dependent activation of AMPK and blood-glucose-lowering effects was observed in a diabetic animal model. In addition, chronic AMPK activation with 14d led to dose-dependent reduction in HbA1c of the animal model.

RESUMEN

Radioactive cesium-rich microparticles (CsMPs) derived from the Fukushima Daiichi Nnuclear Power Plant accident were detected from soils and river water around Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Because CsMPs are insoluble and rich in radioactive cesium (RCs), they may cause the overestimation of solid-water distribution coefficient (Kd) for RCs in the water. Previous studies showed the proportion of RCs derived from CsMPs on RCs concentration in soils collected from areas with different contaminated levels. Because the proportion of RCs concentration derived CsMPs to the RCs concentration of soils in the less contaminated areas is higher than that in the highly contaminated areas, the effect of CsMPs on particulate RCs concentration in river water may be larger in the less contaminated areas. However, the difference in the effects of CsMPs on the particulate RCs concentration and Kd in river water flowing through watersheds with different contaminated levels has not been clarified. In this study, we investigated the effect of CsMPs on the particulate RCs concentration and Kd in two rivers, Takase River and Kami-Oguni River, flowing through the watersheds with different RCs contaminated levels in Fukushima Prefecture. CsMPs might enter rivers due to soil erosion because they were detected only in some samples collected from both rivers during flood events. CsMPs accounted for more than half of particulate RCs concentration in some water samples collected in the flood condition. In particular, the proportion of CsMPs in particulate RCs for the Kami-Oguni River was greater than that for the Takase River. However, when evaluating for the entire water sampling in the flood condition, a proportion of RCs concentration derived from CsMPs in the average RCs concentrations per unit mass of SS in both river waters collected in the flood condition was not large. CsMPs might temporarily increase the particulate RCs concentration and Kd in the flood event, but CsMPs did not significantly affect them when evaluated throughout the event.

RESUMEN

Cesium-rich microparticles (CsMPs) with high cesium-137 (137Cs) concentrations were released and deposited in surface soil after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Radioactive materials on the soil surface layer enter rivers owing to soil erosion during rainfall. In this study, we investigated CsMPs runoff through the river via soil erosion during rainfall in the Takase River watershed in Namie Town, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. CsMPs were rarely detected in suspended solids (SS) in water samples collected during four rainfalls between February and July 2021. Furthermore, the proportion of 137Cs concentration derived from CsMPs to 137Cs concentration in the form of SS (particulate 137Cs) in the water was ~6% on average, which suggests that 137Cs runoff in the form of CsMPs from the forest to the Takase River was not large.

RESUMEN

The long term dynamics of radiocesium in typical forest ecosystems was studied in the radioactive contaminated areas in Fukushima Prefecture. Six observations sites located in Yamakiya Village (Kawamata Town; since 2014), Tsushima Village (Namie Town, since 2015), and Tomioka Town (since 2017) were monitored. The forests consisted of artificial plantations of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) at Yamakiya Village, Tsushima Village, and Tomioka Town. Tsushima Village also had a natural mixed forest dominated by Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), and Tomioka Town had a young and a mature artificial plantation of Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtuse). Concentrations of 137Cs were monitored in the samples collected from the main aboveground biomass compartments, fresh litterfall, forest litter, and soil. Concentrations of exchangeable forms of 137Cs and stable K were measured in soil samples. During the observation period, the litter radiocesium inventories at all sites decreased significantly to approximately 1% or less of the total ground deposition. Approximately 80% of the total radiocesium inventory is localized in the upper 5-cm layer of soil and there is little downward migration of radiocesium. At the sites with the longest monitoring series (Yamakiya and Tsushima), the radiocesium expectation depths and expectation mass depths were relatively constant at 2-3 cm and 5-6 kg m-2, respectively. Aboveground biomass compartments showed similar decreasing trends in radiocesium aggregated transfer factors, Tag, in the compartments that were exposed to atmospheric fallout in March 2011 (old foliage, small branches, and outer bark). The mean Tag in cedar stand compartments currently are in the range of 10-3-10-2 m2 kg-1 dw. However, the mean Tag and their dynamic trend significantly differed in the wood compartments of the cedar stands, which may indicate root uptake differences of orders of magnitude between observation sites. The difference in radiocesium concentration in wood between the sites becomes less pronounced when normalized by the ratio of exchangeable 137Cs/K in the soils.

RESUMEN

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) has been shown to play an important role in the beneficial effects of exercise on glucose and lipid metabolism in skeletal muscle and liver. Therefore, activation of AMPK has been proposed as an attractive strategy for the treatment of metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes. Many of existing AMPK activators bearing diverse chemical structure were reported. However, there have been few reports of direct AMPK activator with high potency for ß2-AMPK isoform, which is thought to be important for glucose homeostasis, and their chemical structure is limited to benzimidazole core. We describe herein our efforts for identification of novel AMPK activator. Our newly designed 4-azaindole derivative 16g exhibited single-digit nM in vitro activity, and chronic treatment with 16g led to dose-dependent improvement in HbA1c as well as decrease in hepatic lipid accumulation in diabetic animal model.

RESUMEN

After the Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in Japan, freshwater ecosystems near the site remained contaminated by radiocesium (RCs). Clarifying RCs concentrations in aquatic insects is crucial because fishes consume these insects that transfer RCs into freshwater ecosystems. As aquatic insects are usually measured for radioactivity in bulk samples of several tens of insects, variation in RCs concentration among individuals is not captured. In this study, we investigated the variability in 137Cs activity concentration in individual aquatic insects in detritivorous caddisfly (Stenopsyche marmorata) and carnivorous dobsonfly (Protohermes grandis) larvae from the Ota River, Fukushima. Caddisfly larvae showed sporadically higher radioactivity in 4 of the 46 caddisfly larvae, whereas no such outliers were observed in 45 dobsonfly larvae. Autoradiography and scanning electron microscopy analyses confirmed that these caddisfly larvae samples contained radiocesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs), which are insoluble Cs-bearing silicate glass particles. CsMPs were also found in potential food sources of caddisfly larvae, such as periphyton and drifting particulate organic matter, indicating that larvae may ingest CsMPs along with food particles of similar size. Although CsMP distribution and uptake by organisms in freshwater ecosystems is relatively unknown, our study demonstrates that CsMPs can be taken up by aquatic insects.

RESUMEN

Large amounts of radiocesium were released into marine environments following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011. Released radiocesium influenced not only marine environment but also marine biota in Fukushima. Since marine biota as fisheries products is important for Japanese market, it is important to assess the distribution of radiocesium in coastal environment off Fukushima for safety concerns of radioactive contamination. Radiocesium concentrations in sediments are important for understanding fishing ground conditions and for proving the safety of fisheries products in Fukushima. In this study, monthly monitoring data collected from May 2011 to March 2020 were analyzed to describe the temporal variability of 137Cs concentrations in coastal sediments off Fukushima (total of 3647 samples from eight lines at depths of 7-125 m off Fukushima, and three sites in Matsukawa-ura Lagoon). The 137Cs concentration in sediment showed a decreasing trend, but our nonlinear model fitting suggested that this rate of decrease had slowed down. Additionally, 137Cs concentrations were up to 4.08 times greater in shallow sampling sites (7, 10, 20 m depth) following heavy rainfall events (before five months vs. after five months), such as typhoons. These observations were consistent with increasing input from particulate 137Cs fluxes from rivers and increasing dissolved 137Cs concentrations in seawater. Finally, our numerical modeling suggested that riverine 137Cs input could maintain 137Cs concentrations in coastal sediment. These results indicate that riverine 137Cs input following heavy rainfall events is the main factor for maintaining 137Cs concentrations in coastal sediments near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

RESUMEN

The distributions of dissolved 137Cs in river, nearshore, and offshore waters on the east and west coasts of the Japanese island of Honshu were studied in 2018-2021, 7-10 years after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. On the east side along the north western North Pacific (Fukushima Prefecture), estuarine processes, including desorption from riverine particles and dissolution into pore water from riverine particles that had settled to the seafloor, contributed to the maintenance of high dissolved 137Cs activities in nearshore and offshore waters. A survey and mass-balance calculation in a semi-enclosed estuarine area, the Matsukawa-ura, in the northern part of Fukushima, provided convincing evidence that rivers contributed to the influx of 137Cs to coastal waters. In contrast, the extremely low activities of dissolved and particulate 137Cs in the Tedori River of Ishikawa Prefecture on the western side of Japan along the Japan Sea suggested that inputs of riverine 137Cs made a negligible contribution to the increase of dissolved 137Cs activities in the nearshore and offshore waters. The relatively high dissolved 137Cs activities observed in the offshore waters of the Japan Sea were due to movement of FDNPP-derived 137Cs into the Japan Sea via the Tsushima Warm Current. Mechanisms controlling the distributions of 137Cs activities in coastal waters of the eastern and western sides of Japan therefore differ.

RESUMEN

Radionuclide depth distribution in bottom sediments in deep-water zones of dam reservoirs, where no sediment mixing occurs, can be used to reconstruct time changes in particulate activity concentrations of radionuclides strongly bound to bottom sediments. This approach was used to analyze the 137Cs concentration profile in a bottom sediment core collected from Ogaki dam reservoir on the Ukedo River in the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant contaminated zone in October 2019. The derived 137Cs particulate concentrations provided a basis for estimating the dissolved concentration and its temporal trend in the Ukedo River, using the mean value of the apparent 137Cs distribution coefficient. The reconstructed particulate and dissolved 137Cs concentrations and their temporal trends are consistent with monitoring data. The annual mean particulate and dissolved 137Cs wash-off ratios were also calculated for the period of eight years after the accident. Interestingly, the particulate 137Cs wash-off ratios for the Ukedo River at Ogaki dam were found to be similar to those for the Pripyat River at Chernobyl in the same time period after the accident, while the dissolved 137Cs wash-off ratios in the Ukedo River were an order of magnitude lower than the corresponding values in the Pripyat River. Both the particulate and dissolved 137Cs wash-off ratios in the Ukedo River declined faster during the first eight years after the FDNPP accident than predicted by the diffusional model, most likely, due to greater natural attenuation and, to some extent, remediation measures implemented on the catchments in Fukushima.

RESUMEN

The 2011 Tohoku earthquake-tsunami and the subsequent nuclear accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) led to large-scale radionuclide contamination of the marine and freshwater environment. Monitoring studies of marine food products in the Fukushima region have generally demonstrated a declining trend in radiocaesium concentrations. However, the accumulation and elimination of radiocaesium and potential biological effects remain poorly understood for freshwater biota inhabiting highly contaminated areas at Fukushima. Consequently, the present study aimed to assess radiocaesium accumulation and developmental effects on the commercially important catadromous Japanese mitten crab, Eriocheir japonica. E. japonica were collected from four sites along a gradient of radionuclide contamination 4-44 km in distance from the FDNPS in 2017. To determine potential developmental effects, fluctuating asymmetry (FA) was used as a measure of developmental stability. Combined 134Cs and 137Cs values for whole E. japonica from highly contaminated sites 4 and 16 km in distance from the FDNPS were 3040 ± 521 and 2250 ± 908 Bq kg-1 wet weight respectively, 30 and 22 times greater than the Japanese standard limit of 100 Bq kg-1. Estimated total dose rates based on radiocaesium concentrations in whole crabs and sediment ranged from 0.016 to 37.7 µGy h-1. No significant relationship between radiocaesium accumulation and FA was recorded, suggesting that chronic radiation exposure at Fukushima is not inducing developmental effects in E. japonica as measured using fluctuating asymmetry. Furthermore, estimated dose rates were below proposed regulatory limits where significant deleterious effects are expected. The present study will aid in the understanding of the long-term consequences of radiation exposure for non-human biota and the management of radioactively contaminated environments.

RESUMEN

This study monitored post-release movements of 20 wild Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica) [mean ± S.D. 520.8 ± 92.3 mm total length (TL), 217.9 ± 146.3 g body mass (BM)] in a brackish water lagoon in northeastern Japan using acoustic telemetry to elucidate how wild Japanese eels use different river, estuary and marine environments. In addition, 12 cultured Japanese eels (TL = 578.9 ± 18.0 mm, BM = 344.9 ± 25.5 g) were released to understand the comparative behaviours of wild and cultured eels. Both types of eels were simultaneously released in the southern inner part of the lagoon in September 2016 where there are freshwater influences from a river. Following release, eight of the wild eels (40%) were largely sedentary near the released point (river mouth) and stayed at the site for overwinter. Nonetheless, several individuals showed behavioural plasticity of habitat use: three wild eels moved towards the northern part of the lagoon with stronger influence from the sea during May-July 2017. Two wild eels showed clear repeated movements from the lagoon to a river at night and returned to the lagoon by dawn for more than a week every day, and one wild eel migrated upstream for overwintering. Signals from 55% of the wild eels could be detected for more than 6 months, whereas those from all of the cultured eels were lost by December 2016, indicating a short resident time of large cultured eels (BM > 200 g) released in a brackish water area. One wild silver eel migrated to the outer sea during the ebb tide at night in November 2016, probably triggered by the decrease in water temperature (from c. 20°C to c. 13°C), and seven cultured eels similarly moved to the outer sea during October-November 2016. The results revealed the similarities (e.g., nocturnal movements) and differences (e.g., stay period and seasonal movements) in the behavioural characteristics of wild and cultured eels and indicated that habitat connectivity among river, estuary and coastal waters is crucial for enabling eels to efficiently utilise these productive habitats through their behavioural plasticity.

RESUMEN

This study analyzes the 137Cs behavior in the ponds of Okuma Town from 2015 to 2019 in the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP) exclusion zone. A decline in both particulate and dissolved 137Cs activity concentrations was revealed. The decline rate constants for the particulate 137Cs activity concentration were found to be higher than for the dissolved 137Cs activity concentration. In terms of seasonality the dissolved 137Cs concentrations were higher from June to October, depending on the specific pond and year, most likely due to temperature dependence of 137Cs desorption from frayed edge sites of micaceous clay minerals. The apparent Kd(137Cs) in the studied ponds, in absolute value, appeared to be much higher than that for closed and semi-closed lakes of the Chernobyl contaminated area; however, these were comparable to the values characteristic of the rivers and reservoirs of the FDNPP contaminated area. The apparent Kd(137Cs) in the suspended sediment-water system was observed to decrease over time. It was hypothesized that this trend was associated with the decomposition of glassy hot particles. Relying on the theory of selective sorption and fixation, the exchangeable radiocesium interception potential, RIPex(K) was estimated using data on 137Cs speciation in the surface bottom-sediment layer and its distribution in the sediment-water system. For the studied ponds, RIPex(K) was on the average 2050 mEq/kg, which is within the range of values measured in laboratory studies reported in the literature.

RESUMEN

Distributions of 137Cs in dissolved and particulate phases of the downstream reaches of seven rivers and adjacent nearshore and offshore waters as far as ∼60 km south of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP) were studied during the high-river-flow period (June-September 2019) and during the period of October 2019 after typhoon Hagibis. Dissolved 137Cs activities in nearshore water were higher than those in rivers and offshore waters, and this distribution was more intensified after the typhoon, indicating the desorption of 137Cs from riverine suspended particles in addition to the ongoing release of contaminated water from the FDNPP and re-entry of radiocesium via submarine groundwater discharge. This scenario is also supported by the reduction of distribution coefficient (Kd) from a geometric mean value of 5.5 × 105 L/kg in rivers to 9.8 × 104 L/kg in nearshore water. The occupation of desorbed 137Cs to the dissolved activity of this nuclide in nearshore water was estimated to be 0.7%-20% (median: 9.7%) during the high-river-flow period, increasing to 1.4%-66% (32.3%) after the typhoon, suggesting that the desorption during the flood period such as typhoons further contributes to the increase in dissolved 137Cs levels in nearshore water.

RESUMEN

During the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in 2011 significant amounts of radiocaesium were released into the atmosphere from the reactor units 1, 2 and 3. This caused a non-uniform deposition, in composition and direction, of 134Cs and 137Cs in the near field (<30 km) from the reactors. In this work, we elucidate the influence of speciation, including radioactive particles, on mobility and potential bioavailability of radiocaesium in soils and sediments from sites located in different directions and distances from the FDNPP. Samples collected in September 2016 were characterized and subjected to sequential chemical extractions and simulated gastrointestinal fluid leaching, and the 137Cs and 134Cs activities were determined in bulk, grain-size and extracted fractions. The results show that radiocaesium was mainly irreversibly bound and in an inert form. Combined, the two forms contained >90% of the activity present in soils and ~84% in sediments. Digital autoradiography revealed that the inert fraction was predominantly associated with heterogeneities, an indication of radioactive particles. The frequency of heterogeneities was correlated with 137Cs activity concentrations, and both were in agreement with the ambient equivalent air doses measured in situ during sampling. Moreover, in situ gamma spectrometry measurements were used in the InSiCal software tool to derive 134Cs and 137Cs surface contamination. Soil activity concentrations and contamination density estimations, decay-corrected to the day of the FDNPP accident, resulted in 134Cs/137Cs ratios that match the reported release and deposition plumes from the reactor units. Overall, these results demonstrate the persistence of the particle contamination in the Fukushima near field and highlight the importance of including radioactive particles in environmental impact assessments.

RESUMEN

An 80-year-old man was referred to our hospital for further examination of fever, cough and left pleural effusion. The laboratory findings showed acute inflammation, and the elevation of albumin-corrected serum calcium and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. A chest CT revealed centrilobular particulate opacity in the bilateral lung fields and left pleural effusion, indicating acute hypercalcemia and hypervitaminosis D associated with pulmonary tuberculosis. By the confirmation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis on polymerase chain reaction and cultures of the sputum and pleural effusion, a diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis was made. The patient successfully completed a 9-month course of the anti-tuberculosis treatment, and bilateral infiltrative shadows and left pleural effusion in chest X-ray disappeared. Symptoms progressively improved and serum level of albumin-corrected calcium and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 eventually normalized. While pulmonary tuberculosis is an infrequent cause of hypercalcemia, it should be considered in patients with hypercalcemia and elevated serum level of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. J. Med.
